The Temp

In the (not necessarily) distant future, a struggling artist escapes her troubles by working as a temp for a human replacement agency, but when she loses her job and her own replacement steals her life, she must fight to get it back.

Fueled by frustrations with our increasingly Kafkaesque world, I originally wrote THE TEMP as a short story while participating in the Clarion Science-Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop.

My classmates delighted in its playful indictment of late-stage capitalism but insisted my ending felt more like the beginning of a much larger story.

Lo and behold, they were right.

My first revision poured out in script format and the entire first season of a series unfolded inside my head. Combining the irreverent wackiness of The Good Place with the heartfelt poignancy of Severance, THE TEMP is a serialized, half-hour, sci-fi comedy series that chronicles one woman’s madcap journey to expose a corrupt system that sets everybody up to fail — and the ragtag troupe of allies she convinces to help her along the way.

As for me, I’m Devi (rhymes with gravy.) Charmed, I’m sure. An award-winning writer-directrix and proud alum of The AFI Directing Workshop for Women and Fox Studios Filmmakers Program, I write female-forward, darkly comedic scripts that feature misfits banding together to navigate problematic fantastical worlds that mirror our own.
